Annals of Geriatric Medicine and Research: A New Name for New Horizons
Lim Jae-Young

Abstract
A fundamental role of scientific journals is to share the results of academic research and to contribute to discovering new topics and developing academic disciplines. Beyond the communication of knowledge to experts, the academic journal is a worldwide platform for sharing ideas and discussing breakthroughs. The Journal of Korean Geriatrics Society (JKGS) has become a representative journal in the fields of Korean geriatrics and gerontology as it has advanced tremendously in the last 20 years since its first release in 1997. As an official journal of the Korean Geriatrics Society, JKGS has published original articles on all aspects of geriatrics, both clinical and basic studies. It has also expanded into a variety of academic fields beyond the boundaries of geriatric medicine such as public health, nursing care, and welfare and health policy. Particularly, in recent years, multidisciplinary convergence and fusion research studies are focusing more on geriatric medicine. JKGS is a leading journal in geriatric medicine and research in Korea, which has the fastest-aging society. It is comparable to leading international geriatric journals such as the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society in the US, Age and Ageing in the UK, and Geriatrics and Gerontology International in Japan. However, there is an obstacle to the development of the journal, which was restricted to a domestic research network for so long. Despite publishing papers that contain meaningful research achievements, many researchers who wish to read and quote our journal face the limitation of accessibility and language barrier. Therefore, from this issue (September 2016), the full text articles of the journal are published in English so that everybody can access and read it easily from anywhere in the world. On behalf of JKGS, I am pleased to inform you that we are releasing our newly named journal, Annals of Geriatric Medicine and Research (AGMR). We would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank all the authors, reviewers, editorial board members, and managing editorial team for their ongoing commitment and dedication to the new beginning of the journal. Furthermore, we would also like to thank our leadership ? the insightful decision and support for the standards to which the journal aspires. Population aging is a reality in every country in the world due to rising life expectancy and/or declining fertility rates. By 2050, Korea will be the world¡¯s top super-aged society, followed by Japan and Italy. It is not an exaggeration to say that this population aging phenomenon is unprecedented throughout history. Consequently, we are facing new horizons in the social and economic sectors as well as healthcare. All healthcare professionals and researchers recognize the upcoming challenge in society. Our preparation for the future super-aged society will be a great opportunity to further geriatric medicine and research. A higher level of academic achievement in the field of geriatrics will emerge all over the world. A new beginning with AGMR will help our journal meet academic standards and take the lead in the development of the fields of geriatrics and gerontology. We hope our newly named journal will be accessed and referred to easily by everybody, wherever and whenever required. We appreciate any comments and suggestions you may have to help our editorial works, and we always welcome the submission of your best papers.
